Rewind to Election 2004

can't let this go by without a mention:

Grandfather Twilight Endorses Dennis Kucinich for President 2004

Among the Trees 6 pm—In an unprecedented move yesterday the classic children's book icon, Grandfather Twilight, broke twenty years of silence to endorse Congressman Dennis Kucinich for President in 2004. "In these extraordinary times we must act with extraordinary sincerity," he said.

Mr. Twilight joined Alice Walker, Studs Terkel, Wendell Berry, Joanna Macy, Ram Dass, Danny Glover, Jean Shinoda Bolen and a host of others in support of the Congressman from Ohio. Reading from a brief prepared statement he said, "This is not only a matter of Wall Street and Washington, in the Woods our choice for President will be felt for generations. As Mr. Kucinich says, 'This is the moment.' I stand to show my support for Humanity, Peace, and the planet. I endorse Dennis Kucinich for President in 2004."

He went on to surprise everyone by granting an interview. (Deep Forest carries the complete transcript of the interview by Barbara Helen Berger here.)

Following Grandfather Twilight's example, the creatures of the forest met to draw up a formal statement of their own. At the signing event the Bear, acting as spokesbeing, proclaimed all the animals to be in complete agreement. As he boldly signed the document he went on to say, "Congressman Kucinich is our unanimous choice for President. Our hopes are common with humankind and the Earth. What we dream should be taken seriously." (The event is covered by Deep Forest in a pictorial.)
